HONORS OUTLINE INFORMATION, due by friday, april 26th
Hey Honors Pathway 9th graders. Here is the outline I'd like for you to satisfy by the end of the week. I apologize, with grading the DWAs, this information fell through the cracks and I meant to give you a heads up earlier!
You should be answering this essential question as you begin your quest to draft this global literature.
How have the cultural experiences or racial experiences in this piece of global literature developed your understanding of two (of your choice) major themes?
When you consider themes, consult this list of major topics in literature: THEMATIC TOPIC LIST
Once you have your theme statement, you are looking for how you could argue the intricate elements of this theme statement in an organized, 6-CD essay (3-2 chunks) For your outline I need.
1) Your theme statement about the text using the thematic topic list or your own thematic topics.
2) Your three topic sentences.
3) Your six concrete details which prove theme.
That's it! That's a standard outline. For example:
Theme: Khaled Hosseini's novel The Kite Runner comments on the redemptive nature of friendship, especially how acts of redemption can cleanse a broken soul, teaching the reader to aim for action rather than passivity in their lives.
Topic Sentence 1: The novel centers around the friendship of Amir and Hassan, which begins to develop the idea of redemption as an action rather than a passive moment.
CD 1: “It may be unfair, but what happens in a few days, sometimes even a single day, can change the course of a whole lifetime" (Hosseini, 14).
CD 2: "Hassan threw his head back, with a smile I knew all too well, he ran, and as he ran he shouted 'For you! A thousand times over!' A promise, one that faded with the wind that I would remember as I betrayed him. How I wished I could not have just smiled and thought nothing of it. Instead, I fight my entire life to find my forgiveness. I did not know" (Hosseini, 65).
Topic Sentence 2: Amir's migration to America also enhances the reader's understanding of friendship and how it may vary culture to culture, solidifying the messaging that we must live active, rather than passive, lives.
CD 3: “I wondered if that was how forgiveness budded; not with the fanfare of epiphany, but with pain gathering its things, packing up, and slipping away unannounced in the middle of the night" (Hosseini 141).
CD 4: “There is only one sin. and that is theft... when you tell a lie, you steal someones right to the truth... there is a way to be good again" (Hosseini, 67).
Topic Sentence 3: Lastly, Amir's return to Kabul, Afghanistan at the end of the book shows the dynamic friendship with Hassan and how it has changed him permanently, giving the reader one last message about how redeeming oneself is a long, endless journey of action.
CD 5: “It was only a smile, nothing more. It didn't make everything all right. It didn't make ANYTHING all right. Only a smile. A tiny thing. A leaf in the woods, shaking in the wake of a startled bird's flight. But I'll take it. With open arms. Because when spring comes, it melts the snow one flake at a time, and maybe I just witnessed the first flake melting" (Hosseini 231).
CD 6: “She said, 'I'm so afraid.' And I said, 'why?,' and she said, 'Because I'm so profoundly happy, Dr. Rasul. Happiness like this is frightening.' I asked her why and she said, 'They only let you be this happy if they're preparing to take something from you" (Hosseini, 321).

outside reading semester one
Here you will find details about completing the assignment by January 17th, 2018.
By now, you should have chosen and are almost done with your Outside Reading (OR) book for Semester 1.
If you do not finish your OR book or the project on time, as discussed, you will not receive a negative grade, but will not be considered for Honors LA 9. Given there are other steps to the process, I will be semi-lenient with this assignment due-date. I apologize for the delay in information (new to Mt. Si, my apologies!)
